Is the water cool enough for steelhead?

Over the last 90 days, the 7-day average daily high was in the stressful range on 70 days and in the dangerous range on 19 days.

Thresholds are pending scientific review.

Temperature bands for young steelhead

  • Good Good for young steelhead — at or below 60.8 °F
  • Stressful Stressful: slower growth, more disease — above 60.8 °F and below 71.6 °F
  • Dangerous Dangerous: can kill steelhead — at or above 71.6 °F
  • Federal recovery-plan limit — 68.0 °F

The bold line is the 7-day average of daily high temperatures, the measure the bands are based on. The thin line is the daily maximum: each day's high, including today's provisional "so far today" value. A biological band is never applied to the daily maximum.

The calendar colors by 7-day average daily high (7DADM)

  • Good Good for young steelhead
  • Stressful Stressful: slower growth, more disease
  • Dangerous Dangerous: can kill steelhead
  • Not enough data The day had too few readings for a 7-day average to be complete, so it is in no band.
  • Federal recovery-plan limit — 68.0 °F
  • Daily water level; darker blue is deeper. Levels are continuous, so they carry no band.

7DADM is the mean of the daily maximum water temperature over seven consecutive complete local days. The tables above also print each day's maximum, labeled as its own statistic: a biological band is never applied to it (Issue #13).

This is the complete record for Milliken Creek Silverado as one CSV file, rebuilt by the publisher on every build. The archive copy of the same readings may be split into yearly segments; this file is not a link to a segment and always has the same name.

What is in the file

One row per reading, plus a header row that is always there: UTF-8 without a byte-order mark, LF line endings, and RFC 4180 quoting, so a field is quoted only when it holds a comma, a quote, or a line break. Rows are in a fixed order — gauge, then measurement, then time — which is what lets two versions of the file be compared line by line to find what changed. Values are the exact numbers the site stores, not rounded for display; the unit each one is in travels with it in the row, in unit_metric, unit_imperial, and raw_unit. Both observed_at_utc and ingested_at_utc are ISO-8601 in UTC with a trailing Z and whole seconds, so a timestamp is never ambiguous across the daylight-saving change; the local times in the table above are those same instants read in the gauge's time zone.

stream_slug
Which stream the reading belongs to. Every row of this file is the same stream.
gauge_slug
Which gauge on that stream took it — a stream can have more than one.
logger_sn
The data logger's serial number, recorded with the reading and never rewritten.
sensor_sn
The sensor's serial number, so swapping a sensor later cannot move an old reading's provenance.
measurement_type
What was measured, as a code — the same codes this page labels in its own column headings.
observed_at_utc
When the reading was taken, as ISO-8601 UTC with a trailing Z, whole seconds: 2026-09-14T21:45:00Z.
value_metric
The value in metric units, exactly as the site stores it.
unit_metric
The unit value_metric is in, written in each row beside it.
value_imperial
The same value in US units, converted with the unit registry's factor and rounded to its precision plus two places.
unit_imperial
The unit value_imperial is in.
raw_value
The value as the logger reported it, before any conversion.
raw_unit
The unit raw_value is in, as the logger reported it.
source
Which ingest path produced the row, so a change of instrument is visible in the data.
ingested_at_utc
When the site stored the reading, in ISO-8601 UTC with a trailing Z — when it arrived, not when it was measured.

About this data

Water level at gauge: depth of water above the sensor, relative to the level recorded when the logger was installed. It is not a surveyed river stage and can't be compared between gauges.

7-day average daily high temperature (7DADM): the mean of the daily maximum water temperature over seven consecutive local days, calculated only when all seven days are complete. The steelhead bands below are applied to that value, never to a single reading.

All times shown are gauge-local time (America/Los_Angeles), the same zone the site is configured for; data files carry UTC timestamps.

Steelhead water-temperature bands, applied to the 7-day average daily high.
Band 7-day average daily high What it means
Good at or below 60.8 °F Good for young steelhead
Stressful above 60.8 °F and below 71.6 °F Stressful: slower growth, more disease
Dangerous at or above 71.6 °F Dangerous: can kill steelhead
Federal reference 68.0 °F Federal recovery-plan limit for suitable summer rearing.
Heat spike 75.2 °F A single reading or daily high at or above this value.

Biological thresholds from published research (EPA 2003 and others), not legal limits. Sources: EPA Region 10 (2003) Tables 1, 3, and 4; NMFS 2016 recovery plan, Vol. IV; WDOE 2002 via Carter 2005; Nielsen et al. 1994; Sullivan et al. 2000.

Thresholds are pending scientific review.

Seasonal limits for spawning and smoltification are configured but not applied.
